Cloud vs. Desktop Applications: Setting the Record Straight

Let me be clear: The Edge is anything but a "legacy" system.

I felt compelled to write this after noticing a competitor's Cloud-based solution label our system, "The Edge," as "legacy," a term that, according to Webster's dictionary, refers to "a previous or outdated computer system." It's disheartening to see a competitor resort to such tactics.

 

Over twenty years ago, I made a commitment to never leave our customers technologically disadvantaged.

We've honored that commitment by deliberately choosing to deploy our solution as a desktop application. The Edge is built on the latest version of the .Net Framework and requires Windows 10 or 11 to operate. This choice is driven by several critical factors—uptime, speed, and security being chief among them.

 

A desktop application operates independently of the internet.

When the internet goes down, businesses relying on Cloud-based POS systems are left stranded. Furthermore, when internet traffic peaks—especially during the holiday season—Cloud applications slow down. Not all locations have reliable internet service, and it's precisely when you need it most that it can fail.

 

Security remains a significant concern with Cloud solutions.

Knowing your data is safely backed up and secured on your premises offers peace of mind that is hard to match. Just recently, 14,000 car dealers were locked out of their systems by hackers from June 19th to July 3rd. Imagine your business being without its POS system for 15 days—it's a nightmare scenario.

 

While Cloud applications do have their benefits, mobility can be convenient, but cost is often misleadingly touted as one of them.

In reality, they likely are more expensive in the long run. Whether an application is Cloud-based or not, a computer is still required to run the system in-store. So where are the hardware cost savings? Cloud applications are rented services; stop paying, and you lose access—simple as that. And how do landlords make more money? By raising the rent. You can count on this to happen, especially since many new Cloud systems are backed by venture capitalists focused on making money.

Our next step is to evolve from the .Net Framework to .Net MAUI, creating a hybrid system that offers the best of both worlds—the security and functionality of a desktop application, with the convenience of mobile access for key features, without the security risks or downtime associated with internet outages. Rest assured, as long as I’m at the helm, The Edge will never be a "legacy" system.
